21-year-old Laura Jackson from the University of Exeter in southwest in England started a campaign called Januhairy. She got the idea in May 2018; after receiving negative comments from people when she stopped shaving her body hair while she was preparing for a drama degree that demanded her to do so.
The negative comments made Jackson think about the taboo in society that wants women to shave and wax their body hair to fit in their definition of beauty. She started a Twitter account named Januhairy where women all over the world posted pictures of their hairy body parts in support of her campaign.
“I realized that there is still so much more for us to do to be able to accept one another fully and truly. I just want women to feel more comfortable in their own beautifully unique bodies. This isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal body hair is. It is an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others.” Jackson stated. She managed to raise £1.000 for Body Gossip, a project to “empower everybody to be the best versions of themselves”
Jackson’s major idea for launching the campaign was to make society realize the true and natural beauty of every woman and not always force them to conform to a set of rules. A supporter posted a picture captioned let’s make 2019 the year that women are no longer shamed for their natural body hair.1122
