We have all been in situations where we are lying awake late at night with nothing to do or avoiding that preparation for an exam. Some would preferably read a book, but in all honestly most people would rather be on their phones reading about the next trend; the latest celebrity gossip; looking through an influencers’ social media profile or simply just scrolling through their feed that is being endorsed by someone else who cannot sleep or study. Does that make us social media prisoners?
Social media can be used for a lot of positive things like communicating with friends and family that are miles away from us, generating money, and empowering the youth and everyone around the world just to name a few, but it can equally be negative. Cyber-bullying is one of the biggest crimes today and with the amount of time we spend on these platforms it is easy to get our privacy violated. Social media is taking up most of our time that could have been spent with family and on lost opportunities.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp can either build or break one’s self confidence, all one has to do is post a picture or even give their opinion about something- anything. Some people might say that they don’t care what people have to say about them but most are affected by all the negative comments made about them which have an effect on their psychological well being and the same applies with the direct opposite.
I think it’s safe to say that social media platforms can be both positive and negative, it all depends on what you use it for and how you handle different situations.
